Biography
When I first came to URI in 1972 I had just completed my masters degree from the University of Florida. I am still an avid Gator fan but now support the Rhody Rams as well! I have had many different responsibilities over the years, and have enjoyed them all. Currently I teach pediatric nursing, introduction to nursing, and thanatology. In 2000, I was invited to become an Honors Fellow so I teach both nursing students in the CON and non-nursing undergraduates in the University Honors Program. I chair the College's Curriculum Committee, and organize and author the College's national accreditation with CCNE. I strongly support nursing students' efforts to study abroad and am currently working to expand those opportunities.
I have always had an interest in issues surrounding death and bereavement, specifically as they relate to children and nursing education. I have been very involved with the College's Weyker Thanatology Endowment and many of my activities and publications focus on these interests. Several years ago I helped to establish FRIENDS WAY (www.friendsway.org), a children's bereavement center. I am a group facilitator, have responsibility for the training of all staff and volunteers, and currently am President of the Board of Directors. I am a trainer for the End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC), and am certified in thanatology by the Association for Death Education and Counseling (www.adec.org). In 2003 I was elected Secretary of the ADEC Board of Directors.
